Description

Today's episode touches upon the topic of Brand Building. We’ll talk about Brand SERPs. SERP stands for search engine results page, which is the page with all the search results listed you see when you've entered a search term in a search engine like Google. Once you have a personal brand, people will start searching your name. At this point your Brand SERP becomes phenomenally important. We’ll talk about how you can influence and optimize your Brand SERP.

You'll learn how to design and control the search results for your brand name and your own name. Your Brand Search Engine Result Page (SERP) is like your business card. It's important to be mindful of and intentional about what people who search for you see and are presented.

7 Action Steps for you:

  1. Optimize the title tags of your web pages. Your page titles appear as the blue links in the search engine results. Make them descriptive and interesting and add your keywords, so your website ranks on top on your brand SERP.
  2. Optimize your meta descriptions. Your page descriptions appear underneath the blue links in the search results and they help you to win more clicks when you leverage them correctly.
  3. Optimize your website for rich snippets. This are rich search results like site links, a search box, Twitter boxes, Podcast boxes, video boxes, image boxes, maps, etc. You can increase your chances of rich snippets being triggered on your brand SERP by adding schema markup to your web pages. Schema markup is a kind of code - but you don't have to be a developer to add it. There are tools and plugins for that. A great one for Wordpress websites is Yoast. You can also trigger them by focusing on publishing the sort of content you want to appear in a rich result. For example: Post more videos if you want video boxes to appear and be more active on Twitter if you want Twitter boxes to appear. Stick to a regular and consistent schedule. The algorithm will most likely pick it up.
  4. Perform a search for your exact match brand name like your A-list audience does and look beyond page 1. Focus on making the search results you want to rank on top rank on top by strategically pushing a certain type of content, earning backlinks, etc. and get things you don't want to rank on top to move down in your brand SERP and get hidden on page 2 and beyond by strategically "neglecting" that channel.
  5. When you produce video content, upload it on YouTube and then embed your YouTube videos on your website, rather than directly embedding your video files on your website. Google owns YouTube and prefers showing YouTube videos. YouTube dominates 80% of video boxes, too. Be sure to also optimize your YouTube videos with the right tags, keywords in you video title and description, etc.
  6. Create and publish a lot of branded content consistently to increase the search volume of branded search terms because you can easily domainate those SERPs.
